First Day of School http://kbe.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/120First Day of School
Hello Killarney Beach Families!

We are ready to welcome you back to school next week and look forward to seeing you. Please read this letter for important information on starting school next week. Please be reminded of our staggered start to the week and the mask requirement for students in grades 4 to 8.

Elementary school start date (Kindergarten to Grade 8):

- Students with surnames A-G will attend Tuesday, September 8, 2020

- Students with surnames H-O will join students with the surnames A-G in attending Wednesday, September 9, 2020

- Students with surnames P-Z will join students with surnames A-O in attending Thursday September 10, 2020

- Junior Kindergarten students will begin attendance on Thursday, September 10, 2020

-All elementary students will be attending school Thursday, September 10, 2020

Students in Grade 4 to 8 will be required to wear a face mask while inside the school building. Masks are not required for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3, but are encouraged. Families are encouraged to provide cloth masks for their children that cover the nose and mouth. The SCDSB will provide masks to students who do not have them.

Each morning, students are required to complete a self-screening assessment prior to attending school. The self-screening tool can be found here: Covid19 Self-Assessment.

Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 must stay home. We ask that parents/guardians report their child’s absence as part of our Safe Arrival program.

First Day of School:

The first day of school this year will look a little different. We appreciate your cooperation in having the students arrive safely and follow instruction. Please take some time to discuss these instructions with your child(ren). Please be aware that there will be no one other than staff and students on the yard.

Parents/guardians will drop their child(ren) off outside the school yard. If you chose to drive your child(ren) to school, please wait to arrive closer to 9:30 and after the buses disembark. This will reduce congestion at the entrances and in the yard.

Buses will disembark one at a time as they arrive at school. Students in kindergarten to grade 2/3 will enter the yard through the kindergarten gate. Students in grade 3 to grade 8 will walk on the sidewalk, across the front of the school and enter the yard between the gym and portables. Students will go directly to the line outside their classroom and stand on a dot.

Teachers will welcome students back while meeting them outside the door of their classrooms. You will find a map of the school with teacher names and grades here:Killarney Beach School map by Teacher, Classroom and line up to enter.pdf. This will show you and your child where their classroom is and where to line up.

There will be staff in the yard to help students find their classrooms and lines.

Daily Dismissal:

Students riding the bus will be dismissed first. Buses will load one at a time. The bus colour will be called, those students will head for the bus then the next bus will be called and so on. Students being picked up, walking home or going to the YMCA will be the last group to be dismissed.

Traveling through the Parking Lot:

We expect that there will be an increase in the number of cars travelling through the parking lot in the morning and afternoon.

We strongly suggest that you wait until the buses have cleared in the morning before dropping your child(ren) off at school. That would be approximately 9:25. Once all our buses have arrived and disembarked, the bus loop will be open for kiss and ride drop offs. The kiss and ride drop off is a single lane of traffic where students can get out of the vehicle themselves and head off to their classroom line. Vehicles will not be able to pass in this area for safety reasons. If your child needs help getting out of the car, please find a parking space. The kiss and ride is meant as a quick drop and go option for you.

If you are dropping your child(ren) off prior to the buses clearing our yard, you will need to find a parking space. The bus loop and upper parking lot will be closed to through traffic.

If you chose to pick up your child(ren) at the end of the day, we would recommend that you arrive after the buses have departed which would be approximately 3:55. Those students being picked up, walkers and students going to the YMCA will be the last group of students dismissed each day. The bus loop and upper parking lot will be closed to through traffic.

Transportation:

You would have received a letter from the SCSTC regarding seat assignment on the bus. All students from Kindergarten to grade 8 have been assigned a seat and must stay in those seats.

If you have a child in Junior Kindergarten, you did not receive a letter however one will be sent on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Our staff this year:

Kindergarten Ms. Raines & Mrs. Keenan

Kindergarten Mrs. Oster & Ms. Robson

Kindergarten Mrs. Taylor & Mrs. Vander Kooij

Grade 1 Ms. Andre-Vallins

Grade 1 Mrs. Archie

Grade 1/2 Ms. McFadden

Grade 2/3 Mrs. Kerfoot

Grade 3 Ms. Berry

Grade 3/4 Ms. McCullough

Grade 4/5 Mr. Archie

Grade 5 Mr. Ritchie

Grade 5/6 Mrs. Marshall

Grade 6/7 Ms. Daniel

Grade 7/8 Ms. Moutzouris

Grade 7/8 Mr. Thompson

SERT Ms Bakker & Ms McKenzie

Educational Assistant Mrs. Monk & Mrs. McMullen

Librarian Mrs. Walton

French Mme Fader & Mme Matlok

Planning Time Mrs. Templeton & Mrs. Matlok

Chief Custodian Mr. Belgue

Custodian Mrs. Hamilton

Principal Mrs. Torrie

Vice Principal Ms Murphy

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we navigate through our new routines and do our best to keep everyone safe.

Kerry-Lynne Torrie
